Top 5 things that bug me about my iPhone

iphoneg3 Yes, I got an iPhone.  Yes, I like it and probably won’t go back to Windows Mobile for at least a generation – I just don’t see how we can leapfrog over what Apple has accomplished already.  However!  I’m surprised at all of the things that are bugging me about the darn thing – stuff you don’t hear about in the glowing news stories, only places like Omar’s blog ;)

    1.  It feels like a toy.  These icons are so cutesy and big.  The animations are time wasters and I’m tired of them.  Where are my files?  What applications are open?  Why can’t I customize more?  I’m obviously very used to the Windows ecosystem.

    2.  My @(#*%@# mail is all messed up.  If it automatically downloads, as I easily did on my Windows Mobile phone, the battery life is sucked dry.  So I have to manually fetch and there’s not even a peak/offpeak setting.  Oh, and my Hotmail and Live mail come in in reverse order and aren’t marked as read.  So now I have 200 messages in there from June that are all unread.  And of course I can’t do something as advanced as select all and mark as read.

    3.  It was freakin expensive.  Yes, I knew that and thought it would be worth it considering how much I use it but it makes me treat the device differently.  I am much more apt to leave it at home if I go on an adventure because I don’t want to leave it in the car or risk getting it wet or breaking.  There’s a big psychological difference between a $100-$200 phone and a $300-$400 phone.  I’m much more conscious of it.

    4.  No video.  I was at an outdoor concert yesterday and really wanted to take a video clip but alas, I couldn't.

    5.  Poor MS interop.  I can’t play my phone messages from work on it.  They come to me as .wma mail attachments through Exchange.  Maybe there’s an app that can play Windows Media files but I don’t have it.  And I have a zillion songs I downloaded on my Zune pass which are useless on this thing.  Stuff like this is actually more likely to switch back to Windows than wean myself off of these Windows apps.

Yes, I love the big screen and Safari and the cute SMS interface but sometimes I look at it and think, “That’s all?”  For some reason I expect it to be able to do my taxes and solve world hunger.  Or grate cheese.  Kinda looks like a cheese grater.
